The New Weis Center is excited to offer a Spring Exploration program for ages 6-12, at our beautiful location in the Highlands region of northern NJ! The 152 acre property features a historic main building, covered pavilion, picnic grove, large recreation field, classrooms, hiking trails, and a stream for nature programs and exploring.

This program runs during the 2 weeks in April when most area schools have spring break. Each day incorporates fun and immersive experiences and a variety of nature-focused activities, to enhance your child’s enjoyment and understanding of the wonderful world around them. Crafts and games will focus on ecology, science, flora and fauna and the environment, and will incorporate the natural surroundings. Much of each day will be spent outside (weather permitting).

Spring Exploration: Plants, Animals, Weather and Water!
Tuesday
is all about the most distinctive sign of spring: regrowth and rebirth! Campers will explore spring wildflowers and flowering trees during forest hikes, use plants for craft inspiration, and play some fun plant-themed games.

Wednesday  the focus is on weather and water. Campers will learn about the changing seasons and the role of our watershed by exploring the Blue Mine Brook, spring vernal pools, and our raingarden, and through water experiments.
Thursday  we'll enter the world of animals as we learn about their big jobs that happen every spring, including migration and reproduction, and learn how to observe, identify, track and inhabit the world of our local fauna.

Note: the schedule above may be rearranged or updated to accommodate the weather, site conditions and special guests

Activities include:

  • Hiking to amazing viewpoints and historic ruins
  • Exploring the forest for signs of animal habitat, the changing seasons, and the lifecycle of the forest
  • Plant and tree identification, including spring ephemeral flowers
  • Birdwatching to look for migrating birds, including using field guides and binoculars
  • Team-building games and nature inspired crafts
  • Indoor activities may include yoga-based activities, art projects and nature videos (Planet Earth/Nat'l Geographic)
