Memorial and Legacy Donations

Ways to Make a Lasting Impact

  • Gifts of Stock or Mutual Funds: When you donate stocks or mutual fund shares that you have held for more than one year, and have increased in value, you qualify for a tax deduction on the current market value, and can avoid paying capital gains tax.
  • Naming us as beneficiary of an IRA or other retirement account: Retirement fund assets are taxable to your heirs, but tax-free when given to a non-profit. Changing your beneficiary designation just involves filling out a simple form provided by your plan administrator.
  • Naming us as beneficiary of a bank account: This can be done by changing the designated beneficiary at your bank, without having to change your Will.
  • Naming us as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy: A donor may make an irrevocable gift of an existing policy that is fully paid for, or they may make a gift of a policy that requires additional annual premiums: or the charity may simply be named as a beneficiary of a policy that the donor continues to own and pay for. Through a relatively small annual cost (the premium), you can make a gift far in excess of what would otherwise be possible for you to donate.
  • Gift to us directly from your individual retirement account (IRA) withdrawal: If you are over age 70 1/2, you must take a required minimum distribution (RMD), and will most likely have to pay taxes on it . If you donate some or all of your RMD directly to charity, it is not considered taxable income. Keeping your income lower can help you to avoid paying income taxes, and also possibly avoid the high-income surcharge on Medicare Parts B and D premiums.
  • Gifts by Will: If you are planning on making, or changing your Will, remember that you likely have charitable causes that are important to you. The best way to make sure your favorite causes are remembered is to make a gift in your Will. It can be either a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or the residue of your estate (after paying out other obligations). You should consult with your family, your attorney and financial planner before making a decision, but here is some sample language for making an unrestricted gift by Will:
  • "I Hereby all give and bequeath to The Highlands Nature Friends, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation located in Ringwood, New Jersey (Tax ID 46-5725489) the sum of $______ (or _____ percent of my residuary estate) to be used for its general purposes."
  • If you do decide to make a donation through your estate, please let us know so we can thank you for your generosity!
